If you are traveling to Australia from India, or expecting family to visit soon, you are probably wondering: Can I bring Indian sweets (mithai) into Australia?
It’s one of the most common questions travelers ask. Whether it’s for Diwali, a wedding, or simply because you miss the authentic taste of home, bringing a box of fresh mithai seems like a great idea. However, the Australian Border Force (ABF) has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world, and a simple box of sweets can quickly turn into a costly nightmare at the airport.
Here is exactly what you need to know about bringing Indian sweets into Australia, and why you no longer need to take the risk.
The Short Answer: Yes, But With Major Restrictions
Can you bring Indian sweets into Australia? Yes, but there are massive catches. The Australian Border Force strictly monitors any food items entering the country to protect against pests and diseases.
According to current biosecurity rules, commercially prepared and packaged sweets (meaning they are in factory-sealed packaging with clear ingredient labels) are generally allowed into Australia. Homemade sweets or your local sweet shop sweets that are not commerically packaged and does not have ingredient label are completely banned and will be destroyed.
However, even if your mithai is commercially packaged, you still face strict rules when it comes to dairy. The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) explicitly flags traditional Indian sweets containing milk or dairy as a high biosecurity risk. This means dairy-based sweets like barfi, ras malai, rasgulla, pedas, mysore pak, gulab jamun, or soan-papdi just to name a few... they will be confiscated and destroyed at the airport.
What Happens If You Don't Declare Them?
If you are carrying any food into Australia, you must check "Yes" on your Incoming Passenger Card. If you declare your sweets and they are prohibited, customs officers will simply throw them away. You won't be penalized, but you will lose the sweets (and the money you spent on them).
However, if you fail to declare them, the consequences are severe. A biosecurity officer can inspect your baggage using X-rays or detector dogs. If you are caught providing false or misleading information, you could face:
- Heavy infringement notices and fines (which can exceed $5,500).
- Civil penalty proceedings or criminal prosecution.
- Visa cancellation, which means you will be refused entry into Australia.
For full details on what you can and cannot bring, we highly recommend reading the official guidelines on the Australian Border Force Food Category page and their Seasonal Events page. To learn more about the strict declaration process, visit the ABF Declare It page.
Is risking your visa and thousands of dollars in fines worth a box of stale sweets? Absolutely not.
